Because anti-smoking groups aren’t just fighting the tobacco companies these days. They have fractured over tobacco harm reduction — the idea that people who cannot or will not quit smoking should be provided with alternatives, notably e-cigarettes, which deliver nicotine without burning tobacco. They argue that e-cigarettes will lead to a new generation addicted to nicotine, even if they are not smoking. It focuses largely, but not entirely, on reduced-risk nicotine products, a category that includes e-cigarettes, oral tobacco, and “heat not burn” products that warm up tobacco without burning it. There are no safe tobacco products; all fall along what’s called a continuum of risk.

About 19% of adults smoke in this group of states, compared with about 13% of adults in other states. About 11% of adults under 25 in these states smoke, compared with less than 8% in other states. Smoking prevalence has been consistently higher than average among these 12 states since Truth Initiative’s first report on the topic five years ago. The latest report from Truth Initiative, published last week, also shows that people in these 12 states who smoke tend to do so significantly more than smokers in other states. Life expectancy is about three years lower in the 12 states where smoking is more common than it is in the rest of the country, according to the new report – about 76 years compared with 79 years.

From January 2022 to December 2022, disposable e-cigarette unit share increased from 24.7% to 51.8% of total unit sales. Last year, the FDA ordered Elf Bar and Breeze Smoke off the U.S. market, according to the CDC report.

Companies often face legal cases and police complaints their content sometimes hurt religious sentiment, and many have self-censored content over the years. As part of India's anti-tobacco drive, the health ministry this week ordered streaming platforms should within three months insert static health warnings during smoking scenes. The companies, and India's health ministry, did not respond to a Reuters request for comment. But in India, companies from Netflix to Amazon (AMZN.O) to Disney (DIS.N), also have popular Hindi content which often shows Bollywood actors smoking, something activists say encourages tobacco use.

Eli Stone is a short-form video creator with 1.2 million followers on TikTok and Instagram. Stone has 1.1 million followers on TikTok versus nearly 100,000 on Instagram. This is crucial if you're a TikTok creator, where views can be inconsistent because of the algorithm. Stone also uses an email template when contacting companies. I'm reaching out because recently I dropped everything in my life to chase my dream - and that's to be a content creator (a link to some of my work).
